Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of AA. AA, 1952

Before we become completely self-contained and inner directed, it is very helpful to adopt a “moral” or “life” system we can refer to when frightened or in doubt. Religion offers many such systems but for those not religiously inclined (or even those who are) one of the best systems out there is the 12 steps and 12 traditions of AA. And while the subject is alcohol, with little imagination these steps can be adapted to any aspect of our life or any issue we are struggling with. In addition, with that same imagination, the 12 Traditions are a remarkably simple and effective system for ordering ones life, business and relationships which we can adapt to suit our own dispositions.
